What is HE ELCa?

The Higher Education English Language Carnival (HE ELCa) is an annual event aimed to provide Higher Education students the opportunities to use English outside the classrooms and motivate them to enhance their English competency. It is co-organized by the Malaysian Higher Education Department and a Public University as a host.

History

HE ELCa was first organised in the year 2017 at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) and since then it continues to move forward and become the most awaited event by all. Among the proud hosts of HE ELCa so far are:

Participants

Students with MUET Bands of 3.5 and below from 20 public universities and 4 Government-Linked Universities (GLU) in Malaysia.

THEME

Lingo, Tech, and Trads Unite!

'Lingo' refers to language or communication, 'Tech' means technology or modern innovations, and 'Trads' indicates traditions or cultural heritage. This theme suggests a harmonious integration of these diverse aspects, where traditional practices, modern technology, and language are brought together to create a cohesive and dynamic experience. Together, they produce a learning environment that bridges the gap between conventional teaching methods and contemporary educational tools.

Eligibility

To participate in the competitions, you must be:

1. An undergraduate or diploma student AND
2. Have a MUET Band score of 3.5 or lower OR
3. Fall within the *CEFR proficiency level of B1 or below.

*Kindly refer to the table below to check for the CEFR B1 equivalent test scores.

MoJo

MoJo or Mobile Journalism is an exciting and intellectually stimulating competition that brings together talented student-journalists from various educational institutions to showcase their reporting and communication skills.

Trashion Show

A fashion runway-themed "Malaysian Heritage Meets Futuristic Flair" using recyclable materials to create futuristic traditional Malaysian costumes.

Click, Create & Educate

Click, Create, & Educate is a competition where students are given the platform to creatively convey messages to the general public to raise awareness about the impact of education in empowering individual and community growth.

Harmony Huddle

Harmony Huddle, or otherwise known as Choral Speaking, is a dynamic form of oral expression where a group of individuals recites poetry, prose, or dramatic passages collaboratively.

10 - 15 students per group with one student appointed as the conductor

Green City Challenge

Green City Challenge is a booth competition open to all participating universities to showcase their uniqueness. Each university is allocated 1 booth on the day of HE ELCa 2024 to showcase their universities' uniqueness and creativity based on Green City theme.
